The Story Behind This Photograph

Family history image

When my grandfather Joe Benvenuti arrived in America, success wasn’t waiting for him. Like millions of immigrants, he carried little more than determination, faith, and the belief that hard work could build something lasting.

While writing this book, I discovered photographs and stories that never made it into the final manuscript. Some made me laugh. Others changed the way I understood my own family.

Over the coming months, I’ll share those discoveries here — from old family photos to the places that shaped our family’s story. In this photo, Joe and Nancy had just welcomed their first child Richard, just a few months before Joe went in to basic training at Camp Grant, outside of Chicago. He "bribed" the colonel for weekend passes to visit Nancy and Richard in an apartment rented just off the base. Bribed the colonel with what, you ask? Well, with weekday use of the De Soto, of course!
