When my grandfather Joe Benvenuti arrived in America, success wasn’t waiting for him. Like millions of immigrants, he carried little more than determination, faith, and the belief that hard work could build something lasting.

While writing this book, I discovered photographs and stories that never made it into the final manuscript. Some made me laugh. Others changed the way I understood my own family.

In this photo from 1980, Joe is breaking ground on the Placer Center, Roseville's largest project ever. A development on its scale was so unprecedented there that its hearings and ultimate narrow approval drew the largest ever crowds before the Roseville City Council, forcing leaders to change the venue to the Roseville Theater on Vernon Street.
